“La padella gigante dell’Adriatico” (The giant pan of the Adriatic Sea) is the main attraction of the Sea fest in Porto San Giorgio. It is more than 50 years old, its handle is 8 meters long. The bottom diameter is 4 meters the hem one is 6 meters. 1000 are the oil litres capacity. 32 beaks (each one gifted by 100 fires) bring the oil temperature at 180 degrees and give off an energy of 360.000 kcal/h.The pan can fry up more than 1000 kg of fish in three hours working. About 30 people works around it.
The pan was built to remember a strike of the local fishermen. It was the end of the XVIII century and they wanted to protest against the low salary and the exagerated raise of the cereal prices. The leaders started to be worried about the consequencies of the strike. Families decided to put togheter their food reserves and they ate them alltogether on the beach. A giant pan was built to cook the enormous food quantity.
